Possibly the most unusual exhibit at last year's Southport Flower show was flowers!
And what made them unusual was that the gorgeous arrangement of roses, lilies and forget-me-nots, for love, peace and remembrance respectively, was made from thousands of packets of Blu-Tack®
Back in March 2008 the famously tacky blue stuff turned pink, its first colour change in almost 40 years, to raise money for Breast Cancer Campaign. In addition to donations from sales and other fundraising events that raised over £22,000 for the charity, Blu-Tack®' makers Bostik, commissioned artists Elizabeth Thompson, 25, and 24 year old Edmund Woodward to fashion a unique sculpture from Blu-Tack® Pink.
This has been seen at local shows and events over the summer and its first major outing, and final appearance was Southport, where Bostik's Business Manager, Paul Bousfield handed Breast Cancer Campaign with a cheque for £22,719.67
For Liz this was a second year with a workshop full of Blu-Tack®. Last year the sculptress, who normally uses her modelling skills to make animatronics, puppets and props for theatre, film and TV, created her first giant sculpture from traditional Blu-Tack® - a 4ft spider that was displayed at London Zoo!
For the Blu-Tack® flower arrangement she enlisted the help of fellow sculptor Edmund, whose prop-making skills can be seen in the new Hellboy II movie, to produce a fabulous array of flowers and butterflies in a delicate spiral adorned with ribbons, all in pink.
"It took us weeks and used the equivalent of thousands of packets of Blu-Tack® Pink", explained Liz
It has thousands of hand-made petals and leaves. But it was worth it: we're really pleased with the result and everyone who has seen it has loved it.
Bostik's Michelle Hayman, who devised the fund-raising scheme, said "We were only too glad to help out:. It's a fabulous cause and while we know our donation isn't much to the overall cost of breast cancer research, we know it will be going into top class research and that we have helped, and that's all any of us can do"
